Exceptional object with racing history: Lancia Delta Integrale 16 V (TO 62124 M)
We are always in search of special features, but some discoveries even surprise us. For example, Lancia Delta Integrale group A, which is a real exceptional discovery. The car shines with a complete owner history and an adventurous racing history, which can be tracked in numerous documents. Such car is hard to find in today’s market environment.
Lightning start into the racing career
Starting point of the racing career was Turin. The company car TO 62124 M was registered there on 28.06.1989 by Fiat Auto S.p.A. The vehicle registration document (Ministero dei Transporti) and the green insurance card – die Carta internazionale di assicurazione veicoli a motore – are available.
Lancia Delta Integrale gained momentum immediately into the racing activities. It was involved in the 1000 Lakes rally in Finland with starting number 1 only two months after registration. The car appeared in the well-known Martini look and none other than the local hero Markku Alén was at the wheel. The car was equipped with an 8V engine at that time. However, luck was lacking during the trying experience. The car malfunctioned in WP 19 with burnt cylinder head gasket. The next rally was coming up soon and thus there was tangible opportunity of success.
Rally Sanremo 1989
The showdown was held in northern Italy. During the rally Sanremo 1989, Lancia Delta Integrale 16 V could show the power it offers for the first time. This time, the advertising sponsor was totip. The original vehicle log book showed that the combined power of a 16 V engine was now under the bonnet. Alex Fiorio was at the wheel. He led Lancia to its greatest success and won an excellent second place after the current world champion, the Italian Miki Biasion.
Continuing on a wild ride: rally Catalunya and rally Costa Smeralda
The next street fights were held in Spain and Sardinia in 1990, this time with the logo of the new sponsor FINA. The Belgian Robert Droogmans ended up in the fourth place with the TO 62124 M in the rally Catalunya. He finished in the ninth place in the rally Costa Smeralda.
Steering wheel in Swedish hands: Per Eklund
The records show that Per Eklund used TO 62124 M maintained by semi works team Astra Motorsport from September 1990. This can be seen from a letter by Astra S.r.l. and Fiat Auto S.p.A. At that time, the car shone in a distinctive Swedish yellow and carried the logos of the main sponsors Clarion and Camel. Lancia and Per Eklund should remain associated for 23 years.
Lombard RAC 1990 and rally Sweden 1991
The most popular appearances of Per Eklund: Lombard RAC 1990 and the rally Sweden 1991 held on snow and ice. After a thrilling ride, he finished the world championship events at position twelve and position eight.
A history – as comprehensive as a chronicle
It is rarely the case that the history of a vehicle is documented in such detail as our Lancia Delta Integrale 16 V. There are various bills even for the spare parts that Per Eklund had obtained from Astra S. r. l. for the races in England and Sweden. A fax from Fiat Auto shows that Per Eklund obtained yet another new engine for more than 30,000,000 ITL shortly before the Sweden rally.
Last world championship event
In 1994, Per Eklund registered the car in Sweden and used it there at the Sweden rally. This should be the last appearance at a world championship event full of suspense. TO 62124 M gave way to the Swedish “registration number” PUH 388 and the bright yellow made way for the plain white of the sponsor Uno-X.
Collector’s vehicle racing power
After completing the Lancia racing career, Per Eklund did not part with the vehicle with which he had mastered so many spectacular rallies. The Lancia Delta Integrale 16 V remained in his possession until 2013. The car has currently returned to the state of RAC 1990. In the interest of the future owner, we give great importance to the fact that the rally patina is preserved as much as possible.
